One Good Thing: Gingerbread Hot Chocolate from Cafe Babette
Welcome to One Good Thing, a weekly(ish) series where I write about one really good thing that I think you should know about.
What’s the One Good Thing? Cafe Babette’s gingerbread hot chocolate topped with a thick layer of marshmallow that’s been torched so it’s extra toasty and delicious.
What makes it so good? The first thing you’ll see when the Cafe Babette crew hands you your pale pink cup is the towering curlicue of homemade marshmallow cream on top. It’s like modern art — abstract, a little messy, and beautiful to look at. Once you eat enough of the marshmallow to carve a path for the hot chocolate to flow through, you get a second surprise — it’s not a traditional “chocolate-only” hot chocolate. This hot chocolate is loaded with warm spices and a little bit of orange zest, making it the ideal drink to sip when the temperature is below zero (will we ever feel warmth again?). This is a really special, decadent, delicious drink. You should try it.
I’ve been a Cafe Babette fan for almost a year now. They started out with Franklin-based pop ups, and quickly expanded as demand grew. I’m so glad to see their presence in Indy growing and can’t wait for their shop to officially open. Make sure to grab one of their delicious gooey buns, croissants, or cookies if you stop by!
Where can I get it? Sip this drink on a pop-up basis at Cafe Babette’s work-in-progress, take-out only (for now) shop located near Garfield Park. They’re currently operating on Saturdays only, with pre-orders recommended (but walk-ins are available). Follow them on Instagram for updates, and subscribe to their newsletter for pre-order announcements.
